Comparing Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” to the Bhagavad Gita, by Amit Kshirsagar

All saints say more or less the same things: nobody wants wars, conflicts or aggressions, but still these are the things that go on everywhere. It is instructive to see two entirely different people advise the same thing. The famous Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, in his 1973 song “Live and Let Die,” expresses a message similar to that found in the Bhagavad Gita

Modern-Day Mahabharata: An NRI Perspective on the Destruction of the Braj Heritage Hills, by Animesh Sinha

Sinha at medical camp in the Himalayas I came to Braj roughly two years ago looking for identity in a world that was slowly losing meaning for me. A recent residency graduate born and raised in the United States, I was discouraged by the complexities of practicing medicine in the Western world.

2008 US Presidential Elections, by Shikta Sapkota

(Editor’s Note: All opinions expressed by authors in posts and comments are solely their own and do not reflect any policy or opinions of Tattva magazine, website, Hindu YUVA, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, or any of their officials or affiliates.) The 2008 presidential election is considered one of the most important in US history. There are several reasons for this – (1) Barack Obama is the first African American to be nominated as the Presidential candidate representing the Democratic ticket,  (2) Hillary Clinton was the first woman to run for the office of the President, (3) The US economy is at its worst since the Great Depression, (4) The Republican Vice Presidential candidate for the first time is a woman and (5) the American citizens have long been estranged from the ongoing war against terror in Iraq and Afghanistan

Partnership Working

Partnership Working By Anthony Douglas Partnership working is recognised as the most effective way of improving social care services, and a non-negotiable part of the government’s aim is to provide a seamless care service. However, for students undertaking placements or for more experienced professionals moving to a different service area, the question is: what does it mean in practical terms? This book is both an introduction and an in-depth analysis of partnership working across the public sector in the UK.

Bharat Darshan: My First Trip to India, by Suraj Bassit

Tour group When I first envisioned going to India, many thoughts would rush to my head. It was a mix of different ideas and feelings about India, what will it look like, what it will be like to live there for an extended period of time, anticipation about the food, and so on. With all these different ideas and expectations, there were some emotions that also ran through my body during the few days before I left: excitement, anticipation, anxiety were the main ones

Dollar Crisis and the Reversal of Globalization, by Shobhit Mathur

The year 2008 has been declared by the United Nations as “International Year of Planet Earth.” The official website ( http://www.yearofplanetearth.org/ ) states: “The International Year of Planet Earth aims to capture people’s imagination with the exciting knowledge we possess about our planet, and to see that this knowledge is used to make the Earth a safer, healthier, and wealthier place for our children and grandchildren.” Having an interest in economics and geo-politics, I felt it is an apt time to summarize the current world situation in regards to economy, the lessons we can learn from the economic policies followed in the past, and what possibly lies in store for us in the near future. The United States of America takes a central focus in this article, because of its current economic and political strength and its influence on world politics. The Rise of the U.S.

Nature of the Perfect Men and Women, by Mahendra Mathur

Introduction Only the person who is utterly detached and utterly dedicated, Mahatma Gandhi said, is free to enjoy life. Asked to sum up his life ‘in twenty-five words or less,” he replied, “I can do it in three! And quoted the Isha Upanishad: “Renounce and enjoy.” The person who is compulsively attached to the results of action cannot really enjoy what he does; he gets downcast when things do not work out and clings more desperately when they do. When Arjun asks “What are the characteristics of those who have gone beyond the gunas” in Verse 21 of the Chapter IV, we expect a list of virtues.

Yoga in Times Square, by Piyush Satapathy

“Shiva Shiva Shiva Shiva Sambho, Mahadeva sambho.” This mantra was chanted by more than 500 people from various ethnic groups in Times Square, New York City on the morning of June 21, 2008. The summer solstice was a day of yoga in the heart of Manhattan, one of the largest and busiest cities in America.  I had the opportunity to participate in this event, along with 15 other volunteers from Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh

Pancha Bhutas, by S.K. Balasubramanian

Hinduism upholds a single reality that is manifested in various forms; every part of creation is seen as nothing but a manifestation of this supreme reality. Every form of creation is a combination of one or more of the Pancha Bhutas: Akaasha, Vaayu, Agni, Jalam, and Prithvi.   Although “Pancha Bhutas” is often translated as “five elements,” I prefer “elemental states” rather the conventional translation.

Samarth Ramdas – The Guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji

Chhatrapati Shivaji was the 17th century Hindu King who inspired and organized the native people for the fight against the Moguls and five Sultanats (Shahas) –foreign invaders who had conquered Bharat to loot its wealth and intellect and to destroy its ancient culture and civilization.  After 36 years of fighting, Shivaji established the ideal kingdom with rule of law, a Hindu kingdom, rather than a kingdom under his own name.  His coronation as a king took place in 1674 A.D. on the Jyeshtha Shukla Trayodashi (13th day of the bright half of Jyeshtha Maasa) day at Raigarh in Maharashtra. His kingdom was known as “Hindavi Swaraja” (Sovereign Hindu State)
