Managing Multiple Myeloma: turning an acute cancer into a chronic disease

The other day while travelling home on a long train journey, I was browsing the NY Times app on my iPhone and came across an interesting story about multiple myeloma in the Health section : “For many patients with cancers like chronic lymphoma, chronic myelocytic leukemia and now multiple myeloma, longevity lies in the ability of science to remain one step ahead of the malignancy by unraveling its genetic and molecular underpinnings and producing treatments tailored to counter them.” Now, I don’t think there is actually something called chronic lymphoma (non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), yes), but you get the gist of what the reporter is saying – acute deadly hematologic cancers are gradually being turned into chronic diseases.

Using technology to derive Sentiments Analysis in Pharma

This week offers a nice break in science topics on the blog and a chance to look at how technology can be used to monitor social media, physician and patient sentiments about drugs and various diseases in a practical way.  I’ve been interested in analysing trends in data since my undergraduate days when I created the first automated computerised football (soccer) notation system for looking at strategies and tactics employed by winning and losing teams.

First-generation H1-antihistamines should no longer be available over-the-counter for self-medication

From the GA2LEN position paper : First-generation H1-antihistamines obtained without prescription are the most frequent form of self-medication for allergic diseases, coughs and colds and insomnia even though they have potentially dangerous unwanted effects which are not recognized by the general public. A GA2LEN (Global Allergy and Asthma European Network) task force assessed the unwanted side-effects and potential dangers of first-generation H1-antihistamines. First-generation H1-antihistamines, all of which are sedating, are generally regarded as safe by laypersons and healthcare professionals because of their long-standing use.

RNAi and cancer therapeutics

One of the new trends I’ve noticed recently has been the uptick in research on RNAi in basic oncology research.  While searching for some information, this news release popped up from this morning: “Tekmira and Pfizer will collaborate on evaluating Tekmira’s stable nucleic acid-lipid particle (SNALP) technology to deliver small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules provided by Pfizer

A variety of diseases may be associated with IL-33: the new kid in the IL-1 family

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a newly described member of the IL-1 family that is expressed by many cell types following pro-inflammatory stimulation and is thought to be released on cell lysis. Abbott makes some waves in Pharma

While listening to last week’s presentation by BMS on their pipeline, one slide in particular caught my attention: Source: BMS Now, it wasn’t the fact that BMS were second in their table of Total Shareholder Return (TSR) that was interesting to me, but that Abbott were first, and by a long way, according to the chart above.  Of course, shareholder return is only one measure of performance and says nothing at all about putting customers and patients first, but that is another story/blog. Recently, Abbott has been in the news with the acquisition of Solvay , a generics company, which added $3B to their revenues and last night it was announced that the company are also acquiring Facet Biotech , which was being pursued by Biogen Idec

Phthalates in Chemical Fragrances and Plastics

Some people act like I am crazy when I talk about the evils of chemical fragrances in soaps, detergents, fabric softeners, and the ubiquitous artificial perfumes that men and women splash on as if it were rain. They seem to think that I am nuts when I explain that the synthetic odor that wafts off their clothing and bodies is a by product of the petroleum refining process, just like plastic and gasoline and nail polish. O! For the days of glass bottles and waxed cardboard yogurt containers
