Commentary on the breast cancer controversy
After the recent furore over the breast cancer guidelines, I’ve been ignoring the hype and hysteria in the news and quietly waiting for some thoughtful commentary from some breast cancer experts I respect. This morning I got my wish with an email alert from the New England Journal of Medicine. In it, two well respected breast cancer physicians from rhe Dana Farber Cancer Insitute have summarised their views in an editorial.

New Heart Attack Treatment Guidelines Stress Coordination
(HealthDay News) — There’s a message for doctors, hospitals and communities in new guidelines for treatment of coronary disease and heart attacks: Get organized. Every community should have an organized system of emergency care for heart attacks, including programs to identify patients before they get to hospitals and strategies for getting them to medical centers equipped to perform artery-opening procedures, say the guidelines issued by the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. “The focus on integrated systems for patients with STEMI is important,” said Dr.

Synthetic Estrogens in Plastic Food Containers and Canned Foods
From a recent article in the NY Times, by Nicholas Kristoff, about the Synthethic Estrogens from plastic that are found in 92% of American Bodies (one wonders what the other 8% are doing to avoid them?), and about the probable effects they have on the Endocrince System—the all-important glands in the body that tell everything else what to do. This is why I drink my filtered water out of Glass, Not Plastic

Friday afternoon fun
Recently, I was talking with a client about how we use social media for competitive intelligence gathering and the importance of aggregating RSS feeds from blogs, alerts, newswires and journals etc to create a living database that can be searched for useful information. The data gathered can be used for market surveillance and landscape opportunity assessments. I showed them some snippets based on their area of interest and thankfully, it produced some useful information they didn’t know. They seemed suitably impressed. As the conversation continued, we discussed the value of continuous learning and how we get smarter by reading great blogs from other people. Then I got floored with a neat question; “which blogs do you actually read every day and enjoy?” This brings me to the topic of this weeks Friday afternoon fun – putting other people in spotlight. Although I aggregate a lot of feeds, I don’t actually read them all and instead use them for search purposes. On my Mac Mail, however, is a nifty feature that allows me to import RSS feeds of blogs I enjoy reading daily, like this: As new blogs are posted, a number to the right indicates how many are unread. This makes it easier to track new posts.

Yoga can reduce Chronic Back Pain
Yoga may be more effective than standard treatment in reducing chronic low back pain in minority populations, according to a new study. Individuals from low-income, minority backgrounds with chronic low back pain (CLBP) may be more affected due to disparities in access to treatment. Although many CLBP patients seek relief from complementary therapies such as yoga, use of these approaches are less common among minorities and individuals with lower incomes or less education

Future Medicine – Personalized Medicine – 6(6):681 – Summary Where do members of the public turn to understand what genetic tests mean in terms of their own health? Now that genome-wide association studies and complete genome sequencing are widely available, the importance of education in personalized genomics cannot be overstated. Although some media have introduced the concept of genetic testing to better understand health and disease, the public’s understanding of the scope and impact of genetic variation has not kept up with the pace of the science or technology

Regular Yoga May Improve Eating Habits
(HealthDay News) — Practicing yoga regularly may help your eating habits so you can maintain a healthier weight, a new study says. Researchers at the Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center reported a link between yoga practitioners and “mindful eaters,” people who were better aware of their feelings of hunger and fullness and why they ate. These mindful eaters, as opposed to those who ate regardless of hunger or to soothe anxiety or depression, tended to be less likely to be obese, the study found

FDA Says P&G Unlawfully Marketing Vicks Cold and Flu Medicines
FDA has sent a warning letter to Procter & Gamble notifying the company that its Vicks DayQuil Plus Vitamin C and Vicks Nyquil Plus Vitamin C are illegally marketed combinations of drug ingredients and a dietary ingredient. The letter comes about 15 days after the agency removed an original notice from its website, saying it was posted “due to a computer error.” Both of the over-the-counter (OTC) medicines in question, which contain vitamin C in addition to several drug ingredients, are marketed as treatments for cold and flu symptoms. FDA took the action against the Cincinnati-based company: to clarify that these single dosage form combinations of drug ingredients and dietary ingredients legally cannot be marketed because they have not been proven safe and effective; and because the agency previously determined that there are insufficient data to show that vitamin C is safe and effective in preventing or treating the common cold
