A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help lower the risk of developing breast cancer, researchers report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition . The researchers analyzed data from more than 34,000 Chinese women (age 45-74) who participated in the Singapore Chinese Health Study (SCHS) between 1993 and 1995. The researchers conducted in-person interviews to learn about the participants’ diets, weight, hormone use, smoking and exercise habits and education
New evidence suggests that acupuncture may help treat some of the common side effects of hormonal drugs called aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase inhibitors, such as anastrozole (Arimidex®), exemestane (Aromasin®) and letrozole (Femara®), are used to treat hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women

New therapeutic approaches are needed for patients with severe asthma who are refractory to standard therapy with high doses of inhaled corticosteroids plus long-acting β2-agonists (ICS and LABA). Current guidelines for patients with severe asthma recommend the addition of oral corticosteroids, which are associated with substantial morbidity, and, for those with allergic asthma, anti-IgE (omalizumab, Xolair).

This week kicked off with some interesting emails and alerts in my inbox. You may well be wondering what on earth rheumatoid arthritis and colorectal cancer have in common. The answer is that yet more agents in development have bitten the dust.

Last night many people in the NY-NJ-CT region missed the Oscars beamed from the Academy Awards after an argument over money between CableVision and ABC. If a Biotech company and their big Pharma partner has a spat, it is rarely as public or has as much impact as TV deals do, but the shock waves can certainly be felt through the investor community every time a high profile predatory shareholder such as Carl Icahn gets their teeth into a biotech such as Genzyme or Biogen IDEC . It was interesting that the year’s biggest grossing, most expensive and stunning film, ‘Avatar’, lost out to a smaller, niche film about the Iraqi war, ‘The Hurt Locker’, with a stronger plot, storyline and superb acting. It’s a bit like a baby Biotech producing a string of new products with solid efficacy doing well, much as Genentech did with Herceptin , Tarceva and Avastin or Amgen did in their early days with Neupogen and Epogen . Eventually, of course, the new kid on the block becomes household name and new companies rise behind them with new science and a solid underpinning.

Okay, they’re not really attacking. But they are mutant cherries. I’ve been neglecting my friends over at the Agricultural Biodiversity Weblog , but popping over there to catch up quickly turned up a fruit link : Japanese Scientists Create Cherry Tree That Blossoms All Year Round (Telegraph) These sort of “everbearing” mutations have proven useful in a variety of of other crops, including strawberries (which are near and dear to me), but this may be the only one I know of that was artificially induced, rather than naturally occurring.

The University of California strawberry breeding program (the southern branch, based in Irvine) has released two new strawberry varieties , Benicia (formerly C225) and Mojave (formerly C227). The southern California strawberry industry is kind of hurting these days, with increasing yields and increasing acreages (as well as competition from Mexico and elsewhere) pushing down prices and cutting into profit, so I’m sure these will be welcomed, though the last release from this program, ‘Palomar’, has not really caught on.

It just dawned on me that I had several fruit blogs in the “Fruit-ish Links” section, even though I had a perfectly good “Other Fruit Blogs!” section, so I moved ‘em. Don’s Cold Hardy Citrus Blog kind of doesn’t look like it’s a blog anymore, but I moved it and I’ll sort that out later. The Agricultural Biodiversity Weblog is a blog, but not a fruit blog, so I’m keeping it where it is.

What follows is a footnote from Brad whose comments were posted on my most recent entry, Robert Rodgers, Ph.D. Parkinsons Recovery www.parkinsonsrecovery.com Robert, I apologize for not including this footnote. Not being a professional researcher and being academically lazy, I failed to reference my source, so I see why you had to say I “speculate”. The date of this paper is 2006. Of course, further research would be entailed to corroborate the statement, but my point was that traditional doctors and neurologists don’t do their research either, or they just don’t care to share it with laypersons and/or patients. The relationship is paternalistic. Unless you go to public research symposiums (such as those occasionally offered by the MJFF) your fifteen minute office visit is not going to get into a detailed analysis of your symptoms or their etiology. When I asked questions regarding my toe curling (which is only triggered by bicycling) of my family doctor, a sports medicine doctor, and a neurologist, all three merely shrugged and offered no explanations or further interest in the matter. Even after PD fully emerged, it was considered a secondary symptom and in any event it is controlled by L-dopa, so the course of treatment is the same.

Central Asia is possibly the region of the world least on most people’s radar (despite its proximity to that perennial focus, the Middle East), but it is a center of diversity for many, many fruit crops, and as such has genetic resources which could prove critical for future breeders of such things as apples, almonds, walnuts, peaches, pomegranates and many other crops. It also has environmental degradation, unstable governments, and widespread poverty, which threaten those resources, many of which have never made it out of the region thanks to nearly a century of Soviet rule and isolation. Flora & Fauna International has compiled a “Red List” of endangered fruit and nut species in the area.
